"The journey of life can be challenging. I love helping people and organizations get oriented and plot their route to success. A lifelong learner, I am always eager to explore ideas. I approach challenges like a Rubik's Cube, employing patience and puzzle-solving skills. Whether at work or volunteering, I am dedicated to helping people and organizations achieve their goals as a communication professional and educator."
Meet James Steele, one of CNM's most dedicated volunteers and our Director of Communications. For the past four years, James has been an invaluable member of our community. He brings his expertise as Department Chair of Communications & Humanities at Northern Virginia Community College's Woodbridge campus to help job seekers navigate their career journeys.
A Multi-Faceted Volunteer
James's contributions to CNM extend far beyond any single role description. As Director of Communications, his responsibilities continue to evolve with our organization's growth and restructuring. He oversees both internal and external communications. He also provides strategic advice for social media initiatives, coordinates volunteers behind the scenes, and develops systems and procedures that help our organization run smoothly.
James's impact is most visible in the countless ways he shows up for our community. Whether he's emceeing an in-person meeting, serving as a guest speaker, manning the registration table, reviewing resumes, or counseling job seekers at CNM LIVE! events, James can be found wherever he's needed most. His behind-the-scenes work is equally impressive. He writes blogs for our website, recruits new volunteers, and handles various administrative tasks that keep our organization moving forward.
From Job Seeker to Community Leader
James's journey with CNM began in 2020 during his own job search. A family member who had heard about our organization referred him to CNM when he was looking for career guidance. The support and knowledge he gained during that time made such an impact that he knew he wanted to give back to the organization that had helped him.
"I had learned a lot that helped me with my own career management, and I wanted to give back to the organization that had helped me," James explains. "I also wanted to grow and apply my professional skills in new ways."
Finding Joy in Service
What keeps James motivated after four years of service? He points to two key aspects of volunteering that bring him the greatest satisfaction. "First, I like helping people find the help that they need to move forward in their career," he says. "Second, I like collaborating with the team on projects."
The most rewarding aspect of his volunteer experience, however, has been the relationships he's built along the way. "Getting to know the people. I've made some good friends, and collaborating with them is rewarding," James reflects.
A Valued Community Member
Whether he's developing communication strategies, streamlining organizational processes, or helping to develop new programs, James's consistent presence and reliable expertise have made him an indispensable part of CNM's success. His ability to seamlessly transition between roles—from public-facing responsibilities to behind-the-scenes coordination—demonstrates the versatility and commitment that define his volunteer service.
As CNM continues to grow and evolve, volunteers like James Steele exemplify the spirit of service and collaboration that makes our mission possible. His commitment to helping others navigate their career journeys while continuously learning and growing himself embodies the very best of what it means to be part of the CNM family.
